"Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a syndrome
marked by the symptoms of sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy
infant aged one month to one year. The term cot death is often used in the
United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, while crib death is sometimes used
in North America. Typically the infant is found dead after having been put to
bed, and exhibits no signs of having suffered.
This topic is very meaningful to me because I have young
children. I have a baby that is 3 months and I was curious about what caused
SIDS. My baby does sleep on his stomach but I watches him the best I can. Most
SIDS is caused by children sleeping on their stomach. In the future I will try
to get my baby to sleep more on his back. That kind of scares me also because I
am afraid of him choking.
The influence of social and biologic factors on sudden
infant death was studied in a large Chinese population. Data from all birth
certificates in Taiwan from 1988 to 1992 were merged with death certificate
data for post neonatal deaths from sudden infant death syndrome and
suffocation. Age difference of parents of more than 10 years was associated
with a relative risk (RR) of 1.8 (multivariate adjusted, 95% confidence
interval (Cl) 1.3–2.3).
